qathet Regional District Receives Borrowing Approval for Replacement Lund Fire Hall

qathet Regional District (qRD) has received support through the Alternate Approval Process (AAP) to borrow up to $753,153 to replace the Lund Fire Hall.

The Lund Fire hall is one of two fire halls within the Northside Volunteer Fire Department (NVFD) service area. The current Fire Hall, built in the 1970s, is in need of replacement as it is undersized for storage of modern fire vehicles and equipment. The current building also has significant structural deficiencies that need to be addressed.

qRD intends to build the replacement Fire Hall on a property that was recently donated to the NVFD by local residents. The new property, at 2.5 acres in size, is significantly larger than the current 0.1 acre fire hall property on Larson Road. The larger property will mean ample parking space for volunteers as well as an opportunity for outdoor training on site, something that has not been possible in the past. The new location, 700 metres south of the current Fire Hall, will help improve fire service coverage to areas in the Okeover portion of the NVFD service area.

Fire Chief Jim Brown stated this replacement fire hall will better position the NVFD service for the coming decades.

It is anticipated that construction of the Fire Hall will begin in early 2020.
