What we don’t do

The qathet Regional District (qRD) provides over 43 services to our community, however we often get questions about services we do not provide. Check out the list below, along with the appropriate contact information for those who are responsible for the services.

Roads

Maintenance of Highway 101 and all roads in the rural areas in the qRD are a Provincial responsibility administered through the Ministry of Transportation and Transit and their maintenance contractor Capilano Highways Services.
Contact Capilano Highway Services at 1-800-665-3135, info@capilanohighways.ca
Contact the Ministry of Transportation and Transit Area Manager, Rino Parise, at 604-485-3610
Contact the Ministry of Transportation and Transit directly at 604-527-2221.
For Lasqueti, roads are managed by Vancouver Island District (MOTT) in Nanaimo, 250-751-3246

Snow Removal

Just like maintenance on our roads, snow removal is also the responsibility of the Provincial Ministry of Transportation and Transit and their contractor, Capilano Highway Services. Contact Capilano Highway Services at 604-485-9373.

Ferries

The qRD is not responsible for ferry service to and from Vancouver Island and the lower Sunshine Coast. If you have questions about ferry service, please contact BC Ferries via www.bcferries.com

Hazard Tree Removal on Private Property
Property owners are responsible for removing hazard trees. The qRD is responsible for removing hazard trees on qRD properties and in parks.

Issue Property Tax Notices

During the month of June you will receive your property tax notice. If you are a rural property owner in the qRD, your tax notice is sent to you from the Surveyor of Taxes.

Regional Districts do not collect taxes directly from the taxpayer. Instead, taxes for Regional District purposes are collected by the Province and by the member municipalities (City of Powell River).

If you have questions about your property taxes contact the BC Provincial Government.

Conservation Services

Regional Districts do not provide conservation, or wildlife management services. The main wildlife rescue facility is operated by the Powell River Orphaned Wildlife Society (PROWLS), which rehabilitates and releases injured or orphaned wildlife. The Conservation Officer Service (COS), enforces natural resource laws and responds to wildlife-related concerns. If you witness an animal in distress, you are encouraged to call PROWLS at (604) 483-9787. In the event of a human and wildlife conflict, or to report bear sightings, please contact the Conservation Officer Service at 877-952-7277 or email Conservation.Officer.Service@gov.bc.ca. Include your name and location in the email.
