qathet, BC – In April, BC Hydro awarded the qathet Regional District (qRD) up to $7,500 to purchase trees for reforestation of the green spaces at the Resource Recovery Centre.
qRD Operations Department staff purchased and planted the trees in May, 2025. The species, sizes and planting locations were determined by qRD public works labourer, Alex Mitchell, who is a certified arborist. The new trees were planted around the green space at the Resource Recovery Centre. This is part of the reforestation of the old incinerator and landfill site.
“The qathet Regional District would like to extend our sincere gratitude to BC Hydro for their generous funding support, which enabled us to purchase these trees without using tax dollars,” said qathet Regional District Chair Clay Brander. “These trees are a beautiful addition to the Resource Recovery Centre and will support our efforts to remediate greenspaces at the Resource Recovery Centre.”
BC Hydro’s Community ReGreening Program helps fund tree planting related to visual aesthetics and environmental enhancements. BC Hydro provides funding for the purchase of the trees. This is the fifth time the Regional District was successful in the BC Hydro Grant, and the funds have placed trees in our parks and cemeteries.
