qathet Regional District, BC – On Thursday, May 8, 2025, at 2:00 pm, the qathet Regional Emergency Preparedness Program, in collaboration with the City of Powell River and Tla’amin Nation, will test the Community Notification System. This proactive measure is a reminder for residents, visitors, and community members to consider how they will receive critical information when disaster strikes.
The Community Notification System is a key tool for delivering real-time alerts following wildfires, earthquakes, severe weather events, and other emergencies. However, it’s just one way to stay informed. Emergency radio stations, social media updates from local authorities, and direct communication with neighbours also play an important role. Residents are encouraged to think about multiple ways they can receive emergency alerts, and ensure they are registered for this test.
“Every test helps us refine the system, and expand our reach,” said Ryan Thoms, Manager of Emergency Services for qathet Regional District. “We urge everyone to sign up, spread the word, and have a plan for how they will get information in an emergency—because relying on just one source may not be enough.”
Signing up for the Community Notification System is quick and easy. Visit qathet.ca/emergency-preparedness, click on “Enroll in the Community Notification System,” and follow the registration steps. For those needing technical support, the Powell River Public Library offers One-on-One Tech Help with Mark Merlino, Adult Services Coordinator. To schedule an appointment, please email mmerlino@prpl.ca or call 604-485-4796.
